The Žižkov Television Tower is a unique landmark with unusual design in Prague. Built between 1985 and 1992, it stands 216 meters or 708 feet heigh , making it the tallest building in the city.
Designed by the architect Václav Aulický and the structural engineer Jiří Kozák, the tower is easily recognizable from all over the city as it stands high above the city’s traditional skyline on a hill in the district of Žižkov, from which it takes its name.
The tower’s structure is unconventional and has a unique technology of its time, so it was patented. It starts with a triangle; its three corners go up in steel columns consisting of double-steel, three tubes filled with concrete. They support nine pods and three decks for transmitting equipment. One of the three pillars extends higher than the others, providing the necessary height for radio antennas and the structure’s rocket and gantry appearance.
The tower has a viewing platform, a restaurant, and a few television and radio transmitters. The viewing platform located 93 meters or 305 feet high, offers panoramic views of Prague and the surrounding countryside. The restaurant, called Oblaca, is located 66 meters or 216 feet high, offers fine dining with stunning views of the city.
The tower has become a popular tourist attraction in Prague, and visitors can take an elevator to the top to enjoy the views or dine at the restaurant. The tower is lit up at night with a colorful light display that can be seen from all over the city.
