Little Venice

Prague’s Little Venice, one of the most idyllic and romantic spots in Prague, is located on the west bank of the Vltava River, in Mala Strana district. It is named after Venice, Italy due to the Čertovka canal that was built in the 12th century, as part of a project to transport goods and building materials around the city and to supply water to the nearby mills. The canal branches out of the Vltava River and then again flows back into it.

Today, the Čertovka canal, dotted with historic mills along its edges, is a charming and romantic spot in Prague that offers a glimpse into the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. The canal, four minutes from the famous Charles Bridge, is lined with colorful buildings and small bridges, making it a popular destination for romantic walks and photography. Visitors can also take a boat tour along the canal, which provides a unique perspective of the city and its historic architecture.

Many famous Czech actors, musicians and other artists have called this area home due to the charming picturesque surroundings, its tranquil atmosphere and the waterways reminiscent of Venice.

Prague’s Little Venice is home to several restaurants, cafes, and bars, many of which have outdoor seating overlooking the canals. Visitors can take a relaxing stroll along the waterways or rent a paddleboat to explore the canals on their own.

The area is particularly beautiful during the summer months when the canal banks are lined with flowers and greenery. Little Venice is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a peaceful afternoon by the water.

One of the most popular landmarks along the Čertovka canal is the Lennon Wall, a colorful mural that was created as a tribute to John Lennon after his assassination in 1980. The wall has become a symbol of peace and freedom and is covered in colorful graffiti and messages of hope.
