Cannabis shops-on the rise

Between my recent trip to Prague mid of March 2023 and the previous one in October 2022, I realized there was an increase in the shops that specialized in Cannabis. Personally, I hope this growth stops. One of the reasons is because I noticed the new shops are opening in the midst of Old Town’s narrow roads that have the old charm and the beauty of the past. Eventually also attracting tourists.

Cannabis shops are increasing in Prague, as the Czech Republic has some of the most liberal drug laws in Europe. In the Czech Republic, possession of up to 10 grams of marijuana or growing up to five plants is decriminalized for personal use. However, selling and distributing cannabis is still illegal, and the cannabis shops that are opening in Prague are operating in a legal gray area.

These shops, often called “coffee shops” or “grow shops,” sell various cannabis products, including buds, seeds, and paraphernalia. While some of these shops are operating legally by selling only products containing low levels of THC, the main psychoactive component in marijuana, others are operating in a legal gray area by selling products that contain higher levels of THC.

It is worth noting that while cannabis shops are becoming more prevalent in Prague, the Czech Republic still has strict laws regarding driving under the influence of drugs and the possession and sale of other illicit drugs.
