In 2010 the Prague 1 Municipal District planned to inaugurate its first-ever volunteer firefighters brigade. To complement this inauguration event, the 9/11 Firefighters Memorial was commissioned by the Volunteer Firefighter’s Brigade of Prague 1 to commemorate the 343 firefighters who died in the 9/11 attack on New York.
The memorial is located on Kampa island in central Prague on the side of Malá Strana. The memorial consists of a stone mounted with a metal plaque, which is a fragment from the structure of the World Trade Center, and a metal firefighter hat on top of a podium-shaped stone and dedicated on September 11, 2010.
The 9/11 Firefighters Memorial symbolizes the heroism and selflessness of the firefighters who risked and sacrificed their lives to save others. It is a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and bravery of the firefighters who responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. The monument serves as a tribute not only to the firefighters who lost their lives but to all first responders who risk their lives to keep their communities safe.
The plaque reads:
A firefighter is a person who lives two lives, one for themselves and one for others.
Therefore the life of a firefighter holds a true understanding of all that is human.
Dedicated to the memory of the 343 New York firefighters who lost their lives
on the 11th September 2001.
